Grissom School 7, located in the Maplewood neighborhood, underwent a transformative modernization project. The school’s unique circular rotunda, originally featuring ‘pie-shaped’ classrooms, was redesigned to enhance functionality. Dysfunctional open spaces were repurposed into breakout support rooms, a library/media center, and a multidisciplinary makerspace. The addition of a two-story structure provided a new main entry, nurse’s office, classrooms, and a gymatorium, offering a fresh and welcoming environment for students and staff.
Key upgrades included daylighting enhancements, which introduced natural light into previously windowless spaces like the cafeteria, and comprehensive infrastructure replacements, including air-conditioning. The updates not only preserved the building’s distinctive character but also brought it in line with 21st-century educational standards, ensuring a supportive and inspiring learning environment.
